Trout Stocking in Massachusetts

Brook, brown, rainbow and tiger trout across more than 500 mapped waterbodies. MassWildlife publishes its stocked waters with coordinates, so the box below ranks the 552 of them nearest a ZIP code with the distance on every row. Every figure here was read from the agency's own page on September 3, 2026.

Where the stocking answer lives. Which agency publishes the stocking record for your state, what that record covers, the season opener where the agency has actually published one, and a link straight to the page that governs. Regulations and licensing are the agency’s, and every state page links it.

5,227 stocked waters from the 7 agencies that publish theirs with coordinates, plus Montana FWP’s dated stocking events live. Registry built September 3, 2026.

The source that governs

Where Massachusetts publishes its stocking record

MassWildlife (Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife) publishes a searchable table by waterbody and town showing every stocking as it happens, plus an interactive map. It comes out as updated daily during the spring and fall stocking seasons, which is the cadence to plan around: anything faster than that is not being published, and anything on this page is older than that by definition.

Season

How MassWildlife sets the Massachusetts trout season

Most states do not publish a single dated statewide trout opener. Here is exactly what MassWildlife does publish.

No season opener

No bar is drawn here because MassWildlife has published no dates for this site to draw. Drawing one anyway would be a guess with a calendar around it.

This state runs no trout season opener; the water is open on the agency's own terms year round.

Massachusetts does not gate its stocked trout waters behind an opening day; the season is set by when the trucks run.

The waters

What is in the Massachusetts stocked water registry

MassWildlife (Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife) is one of only 7 agencies in the country that publishes its stocked waters as geodata, which is the only reason a distance ranking for Massachusetts is possible here at all. This is the composition of that list.

  • 552 waters (kind not labelled)

552 waters, counted from MassWildlife (Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife)’s own published layer and committed to this site on September 3, 2026. A row means the agency lists this water as one it stocks. It is not a statement that fish are in it today.

How Massachusetts does it

The Massachusetts trout programme

Massachusetts publishes the geodata behind its stocking map, which is why this site can put 552 Massachusetts waters on a distance list at all. The programme runs twice a year, spring and fall, and the division is upfront that any given run depends on staffing, equipment, water levels and weather. Tiger trout, a brook and brown cross, are part of the mix, which is unusual.

What goes in, and when. Brook, brown, rainbow and tiger trout across more than 500 mapped waterbodies. March into June, then a fall round beginning in September.

How this record was checked. mass.gov returns 403 Not allowed to automated readers, so the report page could not be fetched directly; its content, the daily update cadence and the species list were read from MassWildlife's own pages through a search restricted to mass.gov, and the stocked waterbody geodata was read directly from the division's own ArcGIS service (org: MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs) on 2026-09-03.
