The fishing year

When fish bite in Florida

Florida's fishing year peaks with largemouth bass spawning in March and April, crappie in the cooler months, tarpon on the coast in summer, and Gulf striped bass below Jim Woodruff Dam late fall to spring.

Each entry below is from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or its published guides, quoted word for word and linked. Line the season up with the week above: a run in its prime and a Great day with a window at first light is the morning to take off.

  1. March and April

    Largemouth bass

Spring is the best time for bass as they move shallow to spawn. Spawning runs from January in south Florida to May in the panhandle, peaking in March and April.

“Spring is the best time of year to catch bass, when fish move into shallow water to spawn. Spawning may occur as early as January in extreme south Florida and as late as May in the panhandle, but March and April are peak months.”

  2. Cooler months

    Black crappie

Most crappie fishing happens in the cooler months, though anglers who fish into the summer do well, especially at night.

  4. Late fall through spring

    Gulf striped bass

The tailwaters below Jim Woodruff Dam support Gulf striped bass and hybrid striped bass fisheries from late fall through spring.

“The tailwaters below the Jim Woodruff Dam also supports popular Gulf Striped Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass fisheries from late fall through spring.”

How the days are rated

Reading the Florida timeline

Each day has two major solunar periods of about two hours, centered on the moon overhead and underfoot, and two minor periods of about an hour at moonrise and moonset. A window within an hour of sunrise or sunset is marked in gold. The rating adds the moon phase, the gold windows and a capped nudge from the National Weather Service forecast for each town. Every factor and its points.

Dawn and dusk are the reliable part; the moon windows are the old angler’s rule.

On a bright summer day the Missouri Department of Conservation notes that heat sends fish deeper, so the light windows at either end of the day carry more of the weight. “Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina: Shore anglers”, NPS staff (NPGallery), Public domain
