When fish bite in Alaska

On Alaska's Kenai River, late run sockeye peak in late July, coho arrive from late July into October and rainbow trout are often best in late fall, while Fairbanks area lakes fish well through the ice from November.

Each entry below is from Alaska Department of Fish and Game or its published guides, quoted word for word and linked. Line the season up with the week above: a run in its prime and a Great day with a window at first light is the morning to take off.

  1. July to mid August

    Sockeye salmon

Kenai River late run sockeye enter the lower river in early July, peak in late July and are usually done by early to mid August.

“Kenai River late-run sockeye salmon enter the lower Kenai in early July, peak in late July, and are generally complete by early to mid-August.”

  2. Late July to early October

    Coho (silver) salmon

Coho (silver) salmon arrive in the Kenai River from late July, with more fish coming from early to mid August through early October.

“Although tradition holds that there are two runs of silver (coho) salmon to the Kenai, there are actually several periods of in-migration. The earlier fish arrive in late July, with more fish arriving early to mid-August through early October.”

  3. Late fall to early winter

    Rainbow trout

Kenai River rainbow trout fishing is often best in late fall or even early winter, after the salmon crowds leave and trout feed on salmon carcasses and eggs.

“Best time is often in late fall, even early winter, after all the “salmon madness” has left the river, and trout are feeding on salmon carcasses and eggs.”

  4. November to early March

    Stocked lake fish

Chena, Harding, Birch and Quartz lakes near Fairbanks and Delta are stocked and should fish well from November through early March, especially in early winter.

“The four largest lakes in the Fairbanks and Delta areas (Chena, Harding, Birch, and Quartz lakes) are stocked and should produce good catches from November through early March. Ice fishing is especially good in early winter.”

How the days are rated

Reading the Alaska timeline

Each day has two major solunar periods of about two hours, centered on the moon overhead and underfoot, and two minor periods of about an hour at moonrise and moonset. A window within an hour of sunrise or sunset is marked in gold. The rating adds the moon phase, the gold windows and a capped nudge from the National Weather Service forecast for each town. Every factor and its points.

Dawn and dusk are the reliable part; the moon windows are the old angler’s rule.

The first hour of light is the part of every day on this page that an agency will vouch for: the Missouri Department of Conservation says fish "seem to prefer the low light conditions of morning and evening." “Fall fishing on the Madison River at sunrise”, Jacob W.
