When fish bite in North Dakota

North Dakota's fishing year turns on walleye, with big fish biting in spring and fall, smaller fish in the warm water of July through September, and paddlefish snagging May 1 to 21.

Each entry below is from North Dakota Game and Fish Department or its published guides, quoted word for word and linked. Line the season up with the week above: a run in its prime and a Great day with a window at first light is the morning to take off.

  1. Spring and fall

    Walleye

Larger walleye are more likely to bite in spring and fall, when water temperatures are closer to ideal for big adult fish to feed.

“Anglers are more likely to encounter larger walleye during spring and fall when water temperatures are closer to optimal for large (adult) walleye to feed.”

  2. May 1 to May 21

    Paddlefish

Paddlefish snagging is legal May 1 through May 21 for anglers with a valid paddlefish tag, unless harvest closes the season early.

“Snagging of paddlefish is legal May 1 through May 21 (if the harvest season is closed early due to overall harvest, the closure will be posted here and as a news release) for those with a valid paddlefish tag.”

  3. July through September

    Walleye

Smaller walleye are more likely to feed and bite when water is warmest, July through September.

“Smaller fish, on the other hand, are more likely to feed and cooperate with anglers when water temperatures are at their warmest in July through September.”

  4. Fall

    Walleye

As temperatures drop in fall, large walleye bite more often as female fish regain their appetite.

“Then, as fall returns, large fish are more likely to appear on the end of your line as temperatures decline and female fish regain their appetite.”

How the days are rated

Reading the North Dakota timeline

Each day has two major solunar periods of about two hours, centered on the moon overhead and underfoot, and two minor periods of about an hour at moonrise and moonset. A window within an hour of sunrise or sunset is marked in gold. The rating adds the moon phase, the gold windows and a capped nudge from the National Weather Service forecast for each town. Every factor and its points.

Dawn and dusk are the reliable part; the moon windows are the old angler’s rule.

The Wisconsin DNR says that in clear waters walleye stay deep in the day and move into the shallows at night, which is why the hour around sunset is shaded on every timeline here. “Fishing in northern Wisconsin for walleye”, Joanna Gilkeson, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Midwest Region, Public domain
