The fishing year

When fish bite in Oklahoma

Oklahoma's fishing year moves from spring crappie spawns and May to June channel catfish on dam riprap, to fall bass chasing shad, to stocked trout from November through March.

Each entry below is from Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation or its published guides, quoted word for word and linked. Line the season up with the week above: a run in its prime and a Great day with a window at first light is the morning to take off.

  1. Spring

    Crappie

Crappie spawn over hard bottom in shallow rocky or woody areas once water reaches 52 degrees F for black crappie and 56 degrees F for white crappie.

“Crappie require hard bottom to spawn, so you want to target shallow areas with rocky outcroppings, gravel or hardwood logs once water temperatures reach 52˚F for black crappie and 56˚F for white crappie.”

  2. May into June

    Channel catfish

Channel catfish gorge before spawning from May into June, and a worm under a bobber along dam riprap catches many small to medium fish.

“A worm and bobber is an effective way to catch lots of small- to medium-sized channel catfish along dam rip rap from May into June while they are gorging during the pre-spawn period.”

  3. Fall

    Bass

Bass fishing improves in fall as water cools into the mid 60s and bass form loose schools to chase young bluegill, shad and shiners.

“Bass fishing in particular is vastly improved in the fall months as water temperatures ease back into the mid-60s. At this time of year, bass will form loose schools and chase young-of-year bluegill, shad, shiners and other bait fish.”

  4. November to March

    Trout

Trout are stocked at Oklahoma's winter trout areas every two weeks from November through March, while warm water species are slow.

“Trout are stocked at these areas every two weeks from November through March. Trout are cold water species and thrive during the wintertime months in Oklahoma, while traditional warm water species such as bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish are relatively inactive.”

How the days are rated

Reading the Oklahoma timeline

Each day has two major solunar periods of about two hours, centered on the moon overhead and underfoot, and two minor periods of about an hour at moonrise and moonset. A window within an hour of sunrise or sunset is marked in gold. The rating adds the moon phase, the gold windows and a capped nudge from the National Weather Service forecast for each town. Every factor and its points.

Dawn and dusk are the reliable part; the moon windows are the old angler’s rule.
