The fishing year

When fish bite in Delaware

Delaware's fishing year turns on the March pond trout opener, Delaware River striped bass spawning in tidal rivers in spring, and trout stocked in White Clay Creek for fall and winter.

Each entry below is from Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Fish and Wildlife or its published guides, quoted word for word and linked. Line the season up with the week above: a run in its prime and a Great day with a window at first light is the morning to take off.

  1. Early March

    Trout

The 2026 downstate pond trout season opened March 7 for youth anglers and March 8 for all anglers.

“Delaware’s 2026 downstate pond trout season will open for youth anglers under age 16 only at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, followed by the opening of the regular downstate trout season for all anglers a half-hour before sunrise on Sunday, March 8, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced today.”

  2. Spring

    Striped bass

Striped bass move up the freshwater part of tidal rivers to spawn in spring, as water warms to 57 to 68 degrees.

“Spawning is triggered by increased water temperatures during spring (57 to 68 degrees) which cause Striped bass to ascend the freshwater portion of tidal rivers for spawning.”

  3. Fall and winter

    Rainbow trout

Trout are stocked in White Clay Creek in northern New Castle County for fishing in fall and winter.

“Trout were stocked in White Clay Creek in northern New Castle County today to provide anglers opportunities to fish upstate Delaware waters for trout in the fall and winter, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced.”

How the days are rated

Reading the Delaware timeline

Each day has two major solunar periods of about two hours, centered on the moon overhead and underfoot, and two minor periods of about an hour at moonrise and moonset. A window within an hour of sunrise or sunset is marked in gold. The rating adds the moon phase, the gold windows and a capped nudge from the National Weather Service forecast for each town. Every factor and its points.

Dawn and dusk are the reliable part; the moon windows are the old angler’s rule.

On a bright summer day the Missouri Department of Conservation notes that heat sends fish deeper, so the light windows at either end of the day carry more of the weight. “Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina: Shore anglers”, NPS staff (NPGallery), Public domain
