The fishing year

When fish bite in Georgia

Georgia's fishing year runs from striped bass below the Albany dam in March and April to trout stocked late March through October, Etowah River stripers May to September, and crappie fall to spring.

Each entry below is from Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division or its published guides, quoted word for word and linked. Line the season up with the week above: a run in its prime and a Great day with a window at first light is the morning to take off.

  1. March to April

    Striped bass

On the lower Flint River, striped bass fishing is best in spring, March to April, when fish move upriver and gather below obstructions like the dam in Albany.

“Fishing is best during the spring (March - April) when spawning urges lead these fish upriver where they congregate below obstructions like the dam in Albany.”

  2. Late March through October

    Trout

Up to 160 streams can be stocked with rainbow, brown and brook trout from late March through October.

“Thanks to a successful partnership between the Wildlife Resources Division and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, 160 streams can be stocked with rainbow, brown and brook trout from late March through October”

  3. May to September

  4. Fall through early spring

    Crappie

How the days are rated

Reading the Georgia timeline

Each day has two major solunar periods of about two hours, centered on the moon overhead and underfoot, and two minor periods of about an hour at moonrise and moonset. A window within an hour of sunrise or sunset is marked in gold. The rating adds the moon phase, the gold windows and a capped nudge from the National Weather Service forecast for each town. Every factor and its points.

Dawn and dusk are the reliable part; the moon windows are the old angler’s rule.

On a bright summer day the Missouri Department of Conservation notes that heat sends fish deeper, so the light windows at either end of the day carry more of the weight. “Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina: Shore anglers”, NPS staff (NPGallery), Public domain
