The fishing year

When fish bite in Maryland

Maryland's fishing year runs through Chesapeake Bay, from yellow perch spawning runs in late February and April striped bass to bluefish May through October and fall white perch.

Each entry below is from Maryland Department of Natural Resources or its published guides, quoted word for word and linked. Line the season up with the week above: a run in its prime and a Great day with a window at first light is the morning to take off.

  1. Late February to April

    Yellow perch

“In Chesapeake Bay, adult yellow perch migrate from the lower parts of the tributaries to the upper regions in search of suitable spawning habitat from late February in the Chesapeake Bay region to April in Deep Creek Lake.”

How the days are rated

Reading the Maryland timeline

Each day has two major solunar periods of about two hours, centered on the moon overhead and underfoot, and two minor periods of about an hour at moonrise and moonset. A window within an hour of sunrise or sunset is marked in gold. The rating adds the moon phase, the gold windows and a capped nudge from the National Weather Service forecast for each town. Every factor and its points.

Dawn and dusk are the reliable part; the moon windows are the old angler’s rule.

On a bright summer day the Missouri Department of Conservation notes that heat sends fish deeper, so the light windows at either end of the day carry more of the weight. “Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina: Shore anglers”, NPS staff (NPGallery), Public domain
