When fish bite in Connecticut

Connecticut's fishing year turns on the trout opener on the second Saturday in April, spring shad runs up the Connecticut River, largemouth bass on nests in May and June, and yellow perch through the ice.

Each entry below is from Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Fisheries Division or its published guides, quoted word for word and linked. Line the season up with the week above: a run in its prime and a Great day with a window at first light is the morning to take off.

  1. Second Saturday in April

    Trout

The catch and keep trout season opens each year on the second Saturday in April.

“Each year, the second Saturday in April marks the start of the “catch and keep” trout fishing season in Connecticut.”

  2. Spring

    American shad

Shad run up all of Connecticut's major rivers in spring, with the largest run in the Connecticut River.

“In Connecticut, spring runs of shad occur in all major rivers (Connecticut, Housatonic, Pawcatuck and Thames), with the largest run occurring in the Connecticut River.”

  3. May and June

    Largemouth bass

Male largemouth bass can be seen guarding their nests in shallow shoal areas during May and June.

“Males can readily be observed guarding their nests (which appear on the bottom as circular light-colored areas about 18 inches in diameter) during May and June in shallow shoal areas.”

  4. Winter

    Yellow perch

Yellow perch feed actively through the winter, which makes them a staple for ice anglers.

How the days are rated

Reading the Connecticut timeline

Each day has two major solunar periods of about two hours, centered on the moon overhead and underfoot, and two minor periods of about an hour at moonrise and moonset. A window within an hour of sunrise or sunset is marked in gold. The rating adds the moon phase, the gold windows and a capped nudge from the National Weather Service forecast for each town. Every factor and its points.

Dawn and dusk are the reliable part; the moon windows are the old angler’s rule.

On a bright summer day the Missouri Department of Conservation notes that heat sends fish deeper, so the light windows at either end of the day carry more of the weight. “Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina: Shore anglers”, NPS staff (NPGallery), Public domain
