The answer

Where South Dakota actually stands

Nothing published

South Dakota publishes no home energy rebate programme of its own. 13 states out of 50 are taking applications, and 31 more have announced a programme without opening it.

  • South Dakota has published no dollar figure for any measure. 21 states are in the same position, which usually means the programme design is not finished rather than that the money is small.
  • South Dakota runs no home energy rebate of its own and its utilities commission sends homeowners to their own utility and to the federal Energy Star rebate finder.
  • There is no application to make yet. South Dakota Public Utilities Commission is the office that will run it.

What is published so far

South Dakota has published no dollar figure yet

21 states are in the same position. An office that has named a programme and published no amount has told a reader something real rather than nothing: the design is not finished, and any figure quoted for South Dakota from somewhere other than South Dakota Public Utilities Commission is an estimate of what the state might do rather than a number the state has published.

South Dakota has no state rebate programme of its own, so a homeowner's only route is whatever their own electric or gas utility offers.

What to do meanwhile

Where South Dakota Public Utilities Commission sends you instead

A utility programme is a different thing from a state one, with its own rules, its own contractor list and its own deadline, and in a handful of states it is worth more than the state programme it stands in for. 31 state offices publish a route like this, and on most of those pages it sits well below the announcement that brought the reader there.

What South Dakota Public Utilities Commission points at

South Dakota runs no home energy rebate of its own and its utilities commission sends homeowners to their own utility and to the federal Energy Star rebate finder.

Some utilities offer rebates for energy efficiency purchases. Contact your utility provider for specific information. To help you find the right rebates for you, the U.S. Department of Energy has developed an “Energy Star Rebate Finder.” Just go to www.energystar.gov/rebate-finder and enter your ZIP code.

Weatherization work under a floor, which for most of the country is the only home energy money with a door open on it. Thirty one state energy offices point a homeowner at a utility programme or a weatherization agency while their own rebate is still being designed, and the referral is usually buried well below the announcement. The other money

A South Dakota rebate is not the federal tax credit

These are two separate programmes and conflating them is the commonest error on pages about this. A South Dakota rebate is money off the job, applied for through South Dakota Public Utilities Commission under its own rules. The federal credit is money off a tax bill, claimed when filing, with no application and no approval step. Different timing, different paperwork, and qualifying for one says nothing about qualifying for the other.

South Dakota Public Utilities Commission does not address on its own pages whether the two can be claimed on one job. Only 10 state offices do, so the silence is normal rather than a signal either way.

How South Dakota compares

13 states are taking applications, 31 are not

South Dakota is in the larger group. Only 13 of the fifty states are taking applications from homeowners, and 31 have announced a programme without opening it, which is the commonest position in the country. The states that are open are Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin.

Across the country 155 separate dollar figures are printed and 21 states print none at all. The spread has little to do with climate: it tracks how each state chose to divide a federal allocation between a small number of large whole home awards and a large number of small per appliance ones.

The outdoor half of a heat pump is the same box in the same place as the outdoor half of an air conditioner, which is why so many homeowners cannot tell from the yard which one they already own. It matters to the paperwork: an office that pays for a swap usually wants to know what the house burns today, and Arizona has written that from September 2026 it will pay only where the equipment being replaced was already electric. “Outdoor air conditioner unit installed in residential garden space”, Shixart1985, CC BY 2.0
