New York Snow Plow Tracker and Road Conditions
New York colours its most travelled highways on the 511NY map by what snowplow operators report from the road, from generally clear and dry through severe snow and ice to closed, and it does not put the plow trucks themselves on the map.
Where the plows are in New York
NYSDOT publishes road conditions on 511NY and does not publish the position of its plow trucks.
A reader gets the road as an operator described it, which is a real answer and a different one. Nothing on the map says whether a truck is on the way.

New York is one of 31 states in that position, and it is a larger group than most readers expect. Publishing a live fleet means publishing where every truck is at every moment, which is a decision about data and about what a department is willing to be measured on rather than a decision about how much snow a state gets.
What NYSDOT does publish is the road, which for the question most people are actually asking is often the better answer. A reader who wants to know whether to drive wants the surface, not the truck. New York also carries roadside cameras on the same map, and a camera pointed at the road two miles ahead settles the question faster than any colour does.
What 511NY shows
511NY carries traffic cameras, a phone app called 511NY Mobile Application and a phone line at 511. NYSDOT describes it this way: "511 New York is the free, official one-stop, all-encompassing telephone and Web service offering information on transportation services and conditions throughout New York State."
Conditions on any state map are reported rather than measured. A plow operator or a trooper enters what they saw, and the map carries it until somebody enters something else, so a colour is a description of the road a while ago on the stretch the person was looking at.

What New York calls each state of a road
NYSDOT runs 8 steps on 511NY, from Generally Clear & Dry to No Active Reporting. NYSDOT publishes a definition beside them.
These are New York’s words and they stop at the state line. There is no national scale: the 33 states that publish a legend use 166 different labels between them, and only 17 publish what their own labels mean. A phrase that means one thing here means something else, or nothing, one state over.
| What the map says | What NYSDOT says it means |
|---|---|
| Generally Clear & Dry | The entire length of the reporting segment appears clear and dry. There are no stretches or spot locations that indicate snow, ice, slush or wet pavement. |
| Wet | The segment is wet with liquid water from rain or fully melted snow. |
| Snow / Ice | Within the segment wheel paths are visible and there is snow, slush or ice on the pavement. This includes areas with wind blown snow or icy spots. |
| Severe Snow / Ice | Within the segment the pavement is not visible in the wheel paths. There is snow, slush or ice build-up within the segment. |
| Closed | The entire reporting segment is officially closed by the police or sheriff or is made impassible by physical conditions |
| Portions Closed | Within the reporting segment there are no lanes open in one or both directions for a portion of the segment. Report here when one direction only is closed or when a portion of the length of a segment is closed -- but not the whole segment. |
| Update Pending | The system automatically reverts to this condition if the segment is not reported on within a four hour period. This may also be selected if no report is received. |
| No Active Reporting | There are no current weather conditions that would require active reporting on the roadway segment. |

Who closes a road in New York
A segment shown as Closed on New York's winter map is one the police or the sheriff has officially closed, or one physical conditions have made impassible.

A closure is a different thing from a bad condition, and it is the one entry on the map that carries the force of law behind it. Driving past a closure device is an offence in most states and a rescue bill in several. The map is where the closure is published.

Plow trackers in other states
New York read September 23, 2026 from New York About, 511NY (New York State Department of Transportation), linked above. Departments replace these services between seasons and a layer that ran last winter may not run this one, so NYSDOT’s own page is the one that governs. Conditions shown on it are reported by people and lag the road. Every state is on the snow plow tracker hub.
