Clifty Falls: When It Actually Flows

The season

What fills Clifty Falls, and when

Indiana DNR's own sentence is the best flow calendar in the Midwest set, quoted below: the park's falls range from roaring plunges to bridal-veil mists to gleaming frozen titans, and winter and spring visits reveal them at their best. Clifty and Little Clifty creeks are wet-weather streams over fossil-rich limestone; late summer runs to mist.

Typical best flow: Winter through spring

What the agency itself says
The park's waterfalls change moods with the weather and the seasons and can range from roaring plunges to delicate bridal-veil mists to gleaming frozen titans. Winter and spring visits reveal them at their best.

Getting there

Access, in the agency's words and ours

Park trails and overlooks serve Big Clifty, Little Clifty and the canyon rim; the identically named gauged Clifty Creek near Columbus is a different stream entirely, so this page runs on the DNR's seasonal wording.

Rain fed

Indiana's big water: upper and lower falls on Mill Creek beside a covered bridge, above the reservoir, so the flow is still the creek's own weather.
