The season

What fills Spearfish Falls, and when

Spearfish Creek shares the canyon's spring-and-snowmelt hydrology, and today's falls runs reliably in every month; the upstream gauge near Lead reads it live. The famous history, a century diverted for hydropower before restoration, circulates widely but is not on the agency's page.

What the agency itself says
Spearfish Canyon Nature Area includes the Roughlock Falls, Spearfish Falls, and the Savoy Pond area. The canyon is considered one of the most beautiful locations in the Black Hills.

The exception that proves the driver rule: spring-fed Burney Falls, where the water arrives underground from aquifer storage and the falls barely notices the season. “Burney Falls (6489840799)” by Prayitno / Thank you for (9 millions +) views from Los Angeles, USA, CC BY 2.0

Gauge: USGS 06430770 Spearfish Creek near Lead SD, upstream of the falls on the same creek. The gauge reads the river, not the brink of the falls, so treat it as the trend line rather than a turnstile.

Getting there

Access, in the agency's words and ours

The trail drops from behind Spearfish Canyon Lodge at Savoy to the falls base, within the nature area the agency describes; fall foliage weekends are the crowd peak, per its own framing.
