The season

What fills Taughannock Falls, and when

Taughannock Creek is a classic Finger Lakes gorge stream: snowmelt plus spring rain make March through mid June the thunder season, and late summer can trim the plunge to an elegant ribbon. Both versions justify the overlook. Our seasonal window is editorial; the park page describes the falls and gorge rather than a flow calendar.

Typical best flow: Mid March through mid June

What the agency itself says
Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet past rocky cliffs that tower nearly 400 feet above the gorge.

Getting there

Access, in the agency's words and ours

The park is open year round dawn to dusk, per New York State Parks, with a flat gorge trail to the base view and rim trails above; winter storm damage can close trails into spring, as the park's trail updates note.

Yosemite Falls in May, running on snowmelt that will be gone by late summer. The National Park Service tells visitors the falls can be dry by August, which is why every falls page here starts from its watershed. “Tourists below Yosemite Falls (39832011431)” by Mike McBey, CC BY 2.0

More falls, and the rest of the New York year

Niagara Falls

Flow controlled

The most famous falls on the continent runs on a 1950 treaty: 100,000 cfs must come over during tourist season daytime hours, half that the rest of the time, with the balance sent to power plants.

Watkins Glen Gorge

Snowmelt

Nineteen waterfalls in one walkable mile of stone stairways and tunnels, with a season set as much by the trail calendar as by the creek.

Kaaterskill Falls

Snowmelt

New York's tallest waterfall by the DEC's own account, a 260 foot two-tier drop in the Catskills painted by the Hudson River School and treated with respect by everyone who reads the DEC's warnings.

Letchworth Falls

Snowmelt

Three major falls on the Genesee River in the Grand Canyon of the East, with the flow-setting dam conveniently DOWNSTREAM, so what comes over is the river's own weather.
