Watkins Glen Gorge: When It Actually Flows

Nineteen waterfalls in one walkable mile of stone stairways and tunnels, with a season set as much by the trail calendar as by the creek.

The season

What fills Watkins Glen Gorge, and when

Glen Creek drops 400 feet through the glen over 19 falls, and its water peaks with spring runoff. The paradox the park page spells out: the Gorge Trail opens in early May and typically closes mid October, so the biggest water of the year partly runs before you can walk beside it. Early season visits catch the best combination of flow and access.

Typical best flow: May through mid October, when the gorge opens

What the agency itself says
Within two miles, the glen's stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade.

Getting there

Access, in the agency's words and ours

The Gorge Trail with its 19 waterfalls opened May 9 for the 2026 season and typically closes mid October, per the park; the rim trails stay open year round but offer no waterfall access from November to May.

Yosemite Falls in May, running on snowmelt that will be gone by late summer. The National Park Service tells visitors the falls can be dry by August, which is why every falls page here starts from its watershed. “Tourists below Yosemite Falls (39832011431)” by Mike McBey, CC BY 2.0

More falls, and the rest of the New York year

Niagara Falls

Flow controlled

The most famous falls on the continent runs on a 1950 treaty: 100,000 cfs must come over during tourist season daytime hours, half that the rest of the time, with the balance sent to power plants.

Taughannock Falls

Snowmelt

A 215 foot single plunge past 400 foot gorge cliffs near Ithaca, taller than Niagara, biggest with the Finger Lakes spring runoff and thin by late summer.

Kaaterskill Falls

Snowmelt

New York's tallest waterfall by the DEC's own account, a 260 foot two-tier drop in the Catskills painted by the Hudson River School and treated with respect by everyone who reads the DEC's warnings.

Letchworth Falls

Snowmelt

Three major falls on the Genesee River in the Grand Canyon of the East, with the flow-setting dam conveniently DOWNSTREAM, so what comes over is the river's own weather.
