Why this is THE Pennsylvania drive

2026 edition · researched & verified

US Route 6 runs the length of Pennsylvania's northern tier, and its finest stretch crosses the PA Wilds from Wellsboro to the Allegheny National Forest. This 2–3 day segment links Pine Creek Gorge — the 'Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania,' some 47 miles long and over 1,000 feet deep — with Cherry Springs' dark skies and the Kinzua Sky Walk, through some of the least-developed forest country in the East.

The itinerary

8 stops, in driving order

Wellsboro · Wellsboro

The gateway town, with gas-lit boulevards and Victorian storefronts that feel lifted from another century. It's the natural first night and provisioning stop. Main Street glows at dusk under the gas lamps.

Gas-lit Victorian main street

Leonard Harrison State Park · Wellsboro (east rim)

The signature overlooks of Pine Creek Gorge sit at the end of a short drive from Wellsboro, with the canyon dropping nearly 800 feet below the main vista. Turkey Path Trail descends past waterfalls toward the creek. This is the postcard view of the PA Grand Canyon in October.

Classic Pine Creek Gorge overlook

Colton Point State Park · Wellsboro (west rim)

The quieter west-rim twin of Leonard Harrison, with CCC-era stone pavilions and rimside views back across the gorge. The winding forest road in is a foliage drive in itself. Come here to escape the east-rim crowds.

Quiet west-rim vistas

Pennsylvania Lumber Museum · Ulysses Township (near Galeton)

A state museum on Route 6 telling the story of the lumber era that once stripped and then regrew these forests — context for every mile of trees you're driving through. A recreated logging camp and sawmill sit on the grounds. Quick, worthwhile stop between Galeton and Coudersport.

Story behind the forests

Cherry Springs State Park · Coudersport vicinity (via Route 44)

A short detour off Route 6, this is one of the best dark-sky sites east of the Mississippi, an International Dark Sky Park. Time your overnight right and you get flaming maples by day and the Milky Way by night. Stargazing fields sit right off the road at 2,300 feet.

Milky Way after the maples

Coudersport · Coudersport

A courthouse town on the Allegheny River headwaters, roughly the midpoint of the drive. Its historic downtown makes a good meal or overnight break. From here Route 6 rolls west through long, empty forest miles.

Midpoint river town

Kinzua Bridge State Park & Sky Walk · Mt. Jewett

A few miles off Route 6, the remains of a 301-foot-tall 1882 railroad viaduct — partially toppled by a 2003 tornado — were reborn as a pedestrian skywalk striding 600 feet out over Kinzua Gorge. A glass-floored overlook hangs above the valley, wall-to-wall color in October. The twisted fallen towers still lie in the gorge below.

Glass-floor skywalk over the gorge

Kane & the Allegheny National Forest · Kane

The 'Black Cherry Capital of the World' sits at the edge of Pennsylvania's only national forest, over 500,000 acres of hardwoods. From Kane, the Longhouse Scenic Byway and Rimrock Overlook put you above the Allegheny Reservoir's foliage-lined arms. A satisfying western terminus for the trip.

Golden hour rules apply double in foliage season: shoot the big overlooks in the first and last hour of light, and save overcast middays for waterfalls and forest interiors — flat light saturates reds that harsh sun washes out.

Hard-won advice

Trip tips for 2026

  • Fuel up in Wellsboro, Galeton, or Coudersport — gas stations are sparse on the long forest stretches between towns.
  • Check PA DCNR's weekly fall foliage reports; the northern tier typically peaks the first two weeks of October, earlier than the rest of the state.
  • Kinzua Bridge State Park and the Sky Walk are free — mornings beat the midday tour-bus rush, and the visitor center adds the tornado backstory.
  • For Cherry Springs, arrive on a moonless night and keep headlights off in the astronomy field — bring a red-light flashlight and layers; it's cold at 2,300 feet in October.

Build one walk into every driving day — the best color moments on this route happen at 2 mph, not 45.

Plan B: Longhouse National Scenic Byway

A 29-mile loop (Routes 59, 321, and Forest Road 262) around the Kinzua arm of the Allegheny Reservoir — arguably the prettiest single foliage loop in the national forest if you have a spare half day near Kane.
