Moving firewood

Can you bring firewood into Hawaii?

Hawaii has a quarantine on the books, which means untreated firewood from outside the line may not come in. The rule is written by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, and it sits below in its own words.

Quarantine

Hawaii restricts moving firewood into or within the state.

A permanent state quarantine restricts moving ohia plants, ohia wood and soil off Hawaii Island, and doing so needs inspection and a Plant Quarantine Branch permit. The wood covered includes untreated wood and logs, so firewood is squarely in it.

Hawaii Department of Agriculture
Pests named
rapid ohia death, ohia wilt, Ceratocystis fimbriata
Movement of ohia material and soil from Hawaii Island requires inspection and a permit issued by the Plant Quarantine Branch of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA).

What the rule says

The quarantine covers ohia wood, logs, mulch and greenwaste as well as the living plant.

Ohia plant parts including: flowers, leaves, seeds, stems, twigs, cuttings, untreated wood, logs, mulch greenwaste and frass (sawdust from boring insects, such as beetles)

Soil from Hawaii Island is covered too.

The state department of agriculture keeps a quarantine rule in force for rapid ohia death.

Regulatory Status: Hawaii State Department of Agriculture has a quarantine rule in effect. The USDA implemented the Myrtaceae Rule that restricts the movement of myrtle plants from entering Hawaii through foreign ports.

The insects and diseases named in the Hawaii rule are rapid ohia death, ohia wilt and Ceratocystis fimbriata. A beetle covers a few hundred yards in a season on its own wings, and several hundred miles in an afternoon in the bed of a pickup, which is the whole reason the rule exists.

The emerald ash borer, photographed by USDA Plant Protection and Quarantine. It flies only a short way on its own; a load of untreated firewood carries it as far as the truck goes, which is why more states name it in their firewood rules than any other pest. “Plant Protection and Quarantine (34954841290)”, APHIS.gov, Public domain
