Firewood in Oklahoma: What You May Cut and What You May Move

Oklahoma's firewood question is about moving wood rather than cutting it. The state agriculture and forestry department asks people to burn firewood where they buy it, because emerald ash borer has been carried into new counties in moved wood, and the Ouachita National Forest lets campers collect dead and down material for a campfire where they camp.

Can you bring firewood into Oklahoma?

Oklahoma asks rather than forbids: buy your wood close to the fire you will burn it on. The rule is written by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, and it sits below in its own words.

Advisory

Oklahoma has no statewide ban, and asks that you buy firewood where you burn it.

Oklahoma has no firewood quarantine in its plant quarantine rules. The state agriculture and forestry department asks people to burn firewood where they buy it, because emerald ash borer has been carried into new counties in moved wood.

What the rule says

Moved wood is how the beetle reaches new places.

In addition to EAB’s ability to spread on its own, people have also inadvertently spread the pest by moving infested firewood.

The beetle is confirmed in southern Oklahoma and was first found in the northeast corner in 2016.

The destructive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is present in McCurtain, Choctaw, and Carter Counties in southern Oklahoma as confirmed by USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

The insect named in the Oklahoma rule is emerald ash borer. A beetle covers a few hundred yards in a season on its own wings, and several hundred miles in an afternoon in the bed of a pickup, which is the whole reason the rule exists.

It flies only a short way on its own; a load of untreated firewood carries it as far as the truck goes, which is why more states name it in their firewood rules than any other pest. “Plant Protection and Quarantine (34954841290)”, APHIS.gov, Public domain

What a cord costs near you

A permit is only good on the land the office manages, so a cheaper cord across the line still has to obey whatever Oklahoma says about firewood arriving. The nearest states posting a price by the cord:

  1. Colorado$2 to $5
  2. New Mexico$2 to $20
  3. Texas$20
