Rules on this permit

There is no standing program; wood comes up only when the Forestry Division has some to move.

DEEP does not maintain an active firewood program. However, to assist in meeting the energy demands of the State, at times the Forestry Division has wood available that can be sold to meet the Division's management objectives.

Moving firewood

Can you bring firewood into Connecticut?

Connecticut has a quarantine on the books, which means untreated firewood from outside the line may not come in. The rule is written by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and it sits below in its own words.

Quarantine

Connecticut restricts moving firewood into or within the state.

State rules limit moving any hardwood firewood inside Connecticut, not just ash. Whenever firewood moves, the person moving it has to carry a document giving its origin and destination, and the state publishes a self issued certificate for that.

As part of the state regulations, when transporting firewood within Connecticut, the person moving the firewood must have a document stating the origin and destination of the firewood.

What the rule says

Some kind of certification is needed every time firewood moves, and the state's self issued certificate covers it.

This can be accomplished through the use of a Self-Issued Firewood Transportation Certificate . The requirement for some type of certification applies whenever firewood is being moved.

Crossing a state line is a federal matter, and the federal requirements are close to the state's.

Movement of hardwood firewood into and out of state is more generally governed by USDA APHIS - the federal agency charged with plant and animal health. APHIS's regulations are very similar, however, to the state's regulations in their specific requirements.

State campgrounds sell wood at most sites, so there is somewhere to buy it when you arrive.

Firewood is available for sale at most campgrounds with the exception of Devil's Hopyard State Park and Pachaug State Forest (Green Falls and Mount Misery) and is subject to availability.

The insect named in the Connecticut rule is emerald ash borer. A beetle covers a few hundred yards in a season on its own wings, and several hundred miles in an afternoon in the bed of a pickup, which is the whole reason the rule exists.

The emerald ash borer, photographed by USDA Plant Protection and Quarantine. It flies only a short way on its own; a load of untreated firewood carries it as far as the truck goes, which is why more states name it in their firewood rules than any other pest. “Plant Protection and Quarantine (34954841290)”, APHIS.gov, Public domain

What a cord costs in the states next door

A permit is only good on the land the office manages, so a cheaper cord across the line still has to obey whatever Connecticut says about firewood arriving. The nearest states posting a price by the cord:
