Where to buy a firewood permit in Louisiana

One office in Louisiana sells a personal use firewood permit. Each office posts its own price on its permit page.

Kisatchie is the only national forest in Louisiana. The Department of Agriculture and Forestry runs the Indian Creek Recreation Area campground but publishes no firewood permit for it.

Rules on this permit

Firewood is handled as a special use permit and starts with the ranger district.

Special use permits for firewood, road access, etc. may be obtained by contacting the appropriate Ranger District Office for more details and information about how to obtain a permit.

Wood for a campfire you are actually burning on the forest is the one case that needs no permit.

When you are building a campfire on National Forest System lands, you can collect a reasonable quantity of wood for the campfire without a permit.

Every special use authorization is tied to a defined use and a defined period, and none of them is permanent.

None of the existing special use authorities provide for permanent use of National Forest System lands.

Moving firewood

Can you bring firewood into Louisiana?

Louisiana has a quarantine on the books, which means untreated firewood from outside the line may not come in. The rule is written by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, and it sits below in its own words.

Quarantine

Louisiana restricts moving firewood, and its agencies ask that wood travel no more than 10 miles.

Louisiana quarantines ten northern parishes for emerald ash borer. Firewood of any hardwood species is a regulated article, so it cannot leave a quarantined parish without a certificate or limited permit from the department. Statewide, the department asks people to buy firewood within 10 miles of where they will burn it and to burn all of it.

What the rule says

Firewood of any hardwood species is a regulated article under the quarantine, not just ash.

the emerald ash borer in all of its life stages; firewood of all hardwood (non-coniferous) species; nursery stock, green lumber, and other material living, dead, cut, or fallen, including logs, stumps, roots, branches, and composted and uncomposted chips of the genus Fraxinus;

Nothing regulated may be carried out of a quarantined parish unless the rule itself allows it.

No regulated articles as defined in this Section shall be moved out of any area of this state that is listed in this Section as a quarantined area for EAB, except as provided in this Section.

The way out is a certificate or limited permit issued by the department and attached to the load.

The regulated articles being moved are accompanied by a certificate or limited permit issued by LDAF and attached in accordance with the EAB federal requirements.

Beyond the quarantine, the department's own guidance is a 10 mile radius and burning everything you bring.

LDAF suggests that all firewood be purchased within 10 miles from where it will be used. If camping or traveling, please make sure to burn all of the wood that is brought to the site.

The insect named in the Louisiana rule is emerald ash borer. A beetle covers a few hundred yards in a season on its own wings, and several hundred miles in an afternoon in the bed of a pickup, which is the whole reason the rule exists.

It flies only a short way on its own; a load of untreated firewood carries it as far as the truck goes, which is why more states name it in their firewood rules than any other pest. “Plant Protection and Quarantine (34954841290)”, APHIS.gov, Public domain

What a cord costs in the states next door

A permit is only good on the land the office manages, so a cheaper cord across the line still has to obey whatever Louisiana says about firewood arriving. The nearest states posting a price by the cord:
