Moving firewood

Can you bring firewood into Utah?

Utah has a quarantine on the books, which means untreated firewood from outside the line may not come in. The rule is written by the Utah State Parks, and it sits below in its own words.

Quarantine

Utah restricts moving firewood into or within the state.

Utah runs a firewood quarantine, rule R68-23. Wood from a quarantined area of the United States or Canada cannot be brought into the state unless it is certified heat treated, and wood harvested in Utah always meets the quarantine.

Heat treated and certified wood may come in
Buying local firewood, harvested in Utah, is the simplest way to ensure that no invasive pests will be transmitted to the state.
Policies and Park Rules, Utah State Parks, read September 22, 2026. Read it at the source

What the rule says

Firewood from a quarantined area cannot come into Utah unless it is certified heat treated.

Importation of firewood from quarantined areas of the United States (U.S.) and Canada into Utah is prohibited, unless the shipment is certified as heat treated or meets the standards of other precautionary rules set by the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF).

Wood cut in Utah always satisfies the rule, so read the label.

Check the label on the firewood to see where it originated. If it was harvested in Utah, the product meets the quarantine.
Utah State Parks. Read it at the source

Out of state wood is allowed if the label says heat treated.

Firewood harvested from out-of-state quarantined areas is acceptable if the label states that it has been heat-treated. Contact UDAF if firewood for sale is not labeled.

If you are bringing wood in, get a certificate from the state it came from.

If importing firewood, contact the state department of agriculture from the area of origin to obtain a certificate.

Offices close their gates for weather and fire restrictions inside these windows, so the office’s own page is the one to check the week you go.

What a cord costs in the states next door

A permit is only good on the land the office manages, so a cheaper cord across the line still has to obey whatever Utah says about firewood arriving. The nearest states posting a price by the cord:

  1. Arizona$1 to $5
  2. Colorado$2 to $5
  3. New Mexico$2 to $20
  4. Idaho$5 to $6.25
