A permit is a legal authorization tied to a specific use for a specific period, not an open licence.

A special-use authorization is a legal document such as a permit, term permit, lease, or easement, which allows occupancy, use, rights, or privileges of National Forest System land. The authorization is granted for a specific use of the land for a specific period of time.

Moving firewood

Can you bring firewood into Mississippi?

Mississippi asks rather than forbids: buy your wood close to the fire you will burn it on. The rule is written by the Mississippi Forestry Commission, and it sits below in its own words.

Advisory

Mississippi has no statewide ban, and asks that firewood travel no more than 50 miles.

Mississippi has no firewood quarantine. The state forestry commission asks people to burn wood cut in their own county, or at most 50 miles from the fire, and points to kiln dried wood when firewood has to travel.

Obtain firewood near the location where you will burn it – that means the wood was cut in a nearby forest, in the same county, or at a maximum of 50 miles from where you'll have your fire.

What the rule says

The state forester's own line sets the 50 mile figure.

When it comes to buying firewood, make sure you buy logs that have been cut in your county. Moving firewood over long distances (more than 50 miles) can increase the risk of introducing new pests that kill trees.

Seasoned wood is not treated as safe to haul; kiln dried is the exception the commission names.

Aged or seasoned wood is not considered safe to move, but commercially kiln-dried wood is a good option if you must transport firewood.

Wood already moved should be burned soon and completely, and the storage area raked and burned too.

If you have already moved firewood, and you now know you need to dispose of it safely, burn it soon and completely. Make sure to rake the storage area carefully and also burn the debris.

After the first emerald ash borer find in the state, the commission repeated the request as one of three steps for residents.

Refrain from moving firewood, which can unintentionally transport the insect.

The insect named in the Mississippi rule is emerald ash borer. A beetle covers a few hundred yards in a season on its own wings, and several hundred miles in an afternoon in the bed of a pickup, which is the whole reason the rule exists.

The emerald ash borer, photographed by USDA Plant Protection and Quarantine. It flies only a short way on its own; a load of untreated firewood carries it as far as the truck goes, which is why more states name it in their firewood rules than any other pest. “Plant Protection and Quarantine (34954841290)”, APHIS.gov, Public domain
