Wyoming Firewood Permits 2026: Prices, Seasons and Rules

Every national forest in Wyoming sells a cheap personal use firewood permit, priced from five to seven dollars a cord with a minimum purchase, and the state sets no firewood quarantine, only a request that people stop moving wood ahead of the emerald ash borer.

Where to buy a firewood permit in Wyoming

7 offices in Wyoming sell a personal use firewood permit, 6 of them federal and 1 run by the state. A cord runs $5 to $7 depending on which office you buy from.

In Wyoming state parks you may pick up dead wood off the ground and burn it where you are camped, and dead standing timber can be cut and taken home only with the superintendent's written permission: the parks rules say the collection and possession of dead wood found on the ground for use as fuel in campgrounds or picnic areas is permitted except as posted by appropriate signs.

Moving firewood

Can you bring firewood into Wyoming?

Wyoming asks rather than forbids: buy your wood close to the fire you will burn it on. The rule is written by the Wyoming State Forestry Division, and it sits below in its own words.

Advisory

Wyoming has no statewide ban, and asks that you buy firewood where you burn it.

Wyoming has no firewood quarantine. The state forestry division asks people not to haul firewood, because the emerald ash borer has not reached Wyoming yet and moving wood is how it would arrive.

By not transporting firewood, we can substantially delay EAB's arrival in Wyoming.
Forest Health, Wyoming State Forestry Division, read September 22, 2026. Read it at the source

What the rule says

The borer is not here yet, and the state has a plan for the day it is.

EAB has not yet been detected in Wyoming and there is a state EAB response plan in place.
Wyoming State Forestry Division. Read it at the source

The nearest known infestation is over the Colorado line, and Wyoming towns are full of planted ash.

Satellite infestations of EAB include Boulder County, Colorado. Ash trees are native to parts of eastern Wyoming, but considering the widespread urban planting of ash trees, EAB has the potential to impact most Wyoming communities eventually.

The beetles that have actually chewed through Wyoming so far are native ones.

Mountain pine beetle and Spruce beetle are two of the most important insect pests in Wyoming's forests. Since the early 1990s, these native beetles have caused tree mortality over millions of acres of federal, state, and private forests in Wyoming.
Wyoming State Forestry Division. Read it at the source

The insect named in the Wyoming rule is emerald ash borer. A beetle covers a few hundred yards in a season on its own wings, and several hundred miles in an afternoon in the bed of a pickup, which is the whole reason the rule exists.

The emerald ash borer, photographed by USDA Plant Protection and Quarantine. It flies only a short way on its own; a load of untreated firewood carries it as far as the truck goes, which is why more states name it in their firewood rules than any other pest. “Plant Protection and Quarantine (34954841290)”, APHIS.gov, Public domain
