Where to buy a firewood permit in New Jersey

One office in New Jersey sells a personal use firewood permit. A cord runs $25 depending on which office you buy from.

New Jersey has no national forest and no BLM field office, so the only public land firewood permit found is the state one. The State Park Service's own camping policy says firewood is not provided at camping facilities and can be bought at some areas, and the camping sheets tell campers to pick firewood up at the park office.

Removing any plant or natural resource from State Park Service land requires the superintendent's permission first.

A person shall not abuse, mutilate, injure, destroy, move or remove any plant or animal or natural resource on lands and water under the jurisdiction or control of the State Park Service without having first obtained the permission of the Superintendent or designee.

Moving firewood

Can you bring firewood into New Jersey?

New Jersey has a quarantine on the books, which means untreated firewood from outside the line may not come in. The rule is written by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, and it sits below in its own words.

Quarantine

New Jersey restricts moving firewood into or within the state.

Every New Jersey county sits inside the state's spotted lanternfly quarantine, and the agriculture department lists firewood of any species among the regulated articles. The permit requirement the quarantine imposes is written for businesses and organizations moving regulated articles for work.

What the rule says

The quarantine covers the entire state, not a set of counties.

The permit the quarantine requires applies to businesses and organizations moving regulated articles in the course of their work.

This quarantine requires all businesses and organizations moving within or from the quarantine zone in the course of their work to obtain permits issued by NJDA.

The insect named in the New Jersey rule is spotted lanternfly. A beetle covers a few hundred yards in a season on its own wings, and several hundred miles in an afternoon in the bed of a pickup, which is the whole reason the rule exists.

It flies only a short way on its own; a load of untreated firewood carries it as far as the truck goes, which is why more states name it in their firewood rules than any other pest. “Plant Protection and Quarantine (34954841290)”, APHIS.gov, Public domain

What a cord costs in the states next door

A permit is only good on the land the office manages, so a cheaper cord across the line still has to obey whatever New Jersey says about firewood arriving. The nearest states posting a price by the cord:

  1. Pennsylvania$5 to $20
  2. New York$10
