Where to buy a firewood permit in New Hampshire

One office in New Hampshire sells a personal use firewood permit. A cord runs $10 depending on which office you buy from.

The two administrative rule quotes come from Chapter Res 5500, Forest Health, the rules of the Division of Forests and Lands, published at https://gc.nh.gov/rules/state_agencies/res5200-5900.html. The state park rules, Res 7300 and Res 7400, say nothing about firewood.

Can you bring firewood into New Hampshire?

New Hampshire has a quarantine on the books, which means untreated firewood from outside the line may not come in. The rule is written by the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands, and it sits below in its own words.

Quarantine

New Hampshire restricts moving firewood into or within the state.

New Hampshire forest health law forbids moving wood into the state, or around inside it, when you know or have reason to think it may be carrying a forest pest the state has declared dangerous. The division's forest health rules set up quarantines and define treated firewood as wood heated to 71 degrees Celsius for 75 minutes or kiln dried.

What the rule says

The state's rules count firewood as treated only when it has been kiln dried or heated to a set temperature for a set time.

"Untreated wood" means any firewood having not been kiln dried or heated to 71 degrees Celsius for 75 minutes or treated with other approved methods as certified by the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service PPQ.

The division can declare a quarantine when a dangerous insect or disease threatens the state's forests, and the declaration has to name the pest, the area and what may not be moved.

When the director following consultation pursuant to RSA 227-K:2, III, determines that a dangerous insect or disease threatens any forest of the state, the director shall designate a quarantine.

What a cord costs in the states next door

A permit is only good on the land the office manages, so a cheaper cord across the line still has to obey whatever New Hampshire says about firewood arriving. The nearest states posting a price by the cord:
