Oregon Firewood Permits 2026: Prices, Seasons and Rules

Every national forest in Oregon hands out free personal use firewood permits with a household cord limit that varies by forest, BLM field offices sell theirs by the cord, and state rules restrict moving hardwood firewood out of five counties where the emerald ash borer is established.

Where to buy a firewood permit in Oregon

12 offices in Oregon sell a personal use firewood permit, 11 of them federal and 1 run by the state. A cord runs $5 depending on which office you buy from. 9 of them give the permit away.

Personal use firewood is free on every national forest in the state: the Umatilla's own page says all National Forests in Oregon and Washington are now offering personal-use firewood free of charge. Separately, a second Oregon quarantine covers sudden oak death on the south coast, and the Rogue River-Siskiyou tells woodcutters to keep firewood within 50 miles of where it was cut.

Lakeview Field Office and Klamath Falls Field Office show the 2024 season season, the most recent that office has posted. A new price and new dates go up on the same page.

Moving firewood

Can you bring firewood into Oregon?

Oregon has a quarantine on the books, which means untreated firewood from outside the line may not come in. The rule is written by the Oregon Department of Agriculture, and it sits below in its own words.

Quarantine

Oregon restricts moving firewood into or within the state.

Oregon has a permanent emerald ash borer quarantine over five northwestern counties. Firewood of any hardwood species, along with ash, olive and white fringe tree material, has to stay inside those counties unless it has been treated by one of the methods the state accepts.

Agency
Oregon Department of Agriculture
Certified or treated wood
Heat treated and certified wood may come in
Pests named
emerald ash borer
Tree materials from ash, olive, and white fringe tree, must remain within quarantined counties (Washington, Yamhill, Marion, Clackamas and Multnomah). Wood waste must be processed and disposed of accordingly.

What the rule says

The quarantine is permanent and covers five counties.

A permanent quarantine is now in effect. Emerald ash borer (EAB) has now been confirmed in five Oregon counties, triggering an expansion of the quarantine.

Tree removal is meant for the cold months, with the wood processed inside the zone before spring.

Conduct tree removal and pruning during this time period. Transport trees and parts of trees to a facility within the quarantine zone where it will be processed before April 1st.

The insect named in the Oregon rule is emerald ash borer. A beetle covers a few hundred yards in a season on its own wings, and several hundred miles in an afternoon in the bed of a pickup, which is the whole reason the rule exists.

A slender metallic green beetle about half an inch long resting on pale cracked tree bark
The emerald ash borer, photographed by USDA Plant Protection and Quarantine. It flies only a short way on its own; a load of untreated firewood carries it as far as the truck goes, which is why more states name it in their firewood rules than any other pest. “Plant Protection and Quarantine (34954841290)”, APHIS.gov, Public domain
