How Utah counts a snow day
The school year
Utah requires at least 180 school days of educational services.
“an LEA shall provide educational services over a minimum of 180 school days each school year.”Utah Admin. Code R277-419-4(1)(a)
Forgiven days
No fixed count; a district that closes for snow and would fall short of 180 days can ask the State Superintendent for a waiver, granted without Board approval if it built contingency days into its calendar.
“The Superintendent may grant a waiver due to excessive snow, inclement weather, or other emergency without Board approval if the LEA has provided contingency school days and hours into the LEA's calendar”Utah Admin. Code R277-121-5
Making up a lost day
Districts must build contingency days into the yearly calendar so that weather closures do not need a waiver except in the most extreme cases.
“An LEA's governing board shall provide adequate contingency school days in the LEA's yearly calendar to avoid the necessity of requesting a waiver except in the most extreme circumstances.”Source
