How Rhode Island counts a snow day
The school year
Rhode Island requires 180 days, or the equivalent of at least 1,080 school hours under a commissioner approved calendar.
“every city or town shall establish and maintain for at least one hundred eighty (180) days annually or the equivalent thereof, exclusive of holidays”R.I. Gen. Laws § 16-2-2(a)(1)
Remote days that count
A district may hold virtual school on a weather or emergency closure day, and it counts as a school day only if its plan was approved by the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education.
“virtual education when the schools have been closed due to inclement weather or other emergency. The plan for virtual education would be subject to, and require approval by, the council on elementary and secondary education in order to count as a school day.”R.I. Gen. Laws § 16-2-2(c)
From the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the state code, read October 8, 2026.

How many snow days Rhode Island districts plan for
