How Vermont counts a snow day

The school year

Vermont requires at least 175 student attendance days a year, with the school board setting the length of the day.

“At least 175 student attendance days in each school year.”
16 V.S.A. § 1071(a)(1)

Forgiven days

A school closed for a cause beyond the board's control may petition the State Board for a waiver, filed within 10 days of each closing and by June 15; if granted the district is treated as having met the requirement.

“When a public school is closed for cause beyond the control of the school board, it may petition the State Board for a waiver of the requirements of this section.”
16 V.S.A. § 1071(c)

From the Vermont Agency of Education and the state code, read October 8, 2026.
