How Missouri counts a snow day
The school year
Missouri requires at least 1,044 hours of actual pupil attendance, plus 36 make-up hours built into the calendar for bad weather.
“providing a minimum term of at least one thousand forty-four hours of actual pupil attendance”RSMo 171.031
Forgiven days
A district must make up the first 36 weather hours and half of any hours beyond that, but never more than 60 make-up hours in total; anything past that is excused.
“a school district may be exempt from the requirement to make up school lost or cancelled due to inclement weather in the school district when the school district has made up the thirty-six hours required”RSMo 171.033.3(2)
Making up a lost day
Make-up is only required if needed to reach the 1,044 hour minimum: the first 36 lost hours, then half of the excess.
“a district shall be required to make up the first thirty-six hours of school lost or cancelled due to inclement weather and half the number of hours lost or cancelled in excess of thirty-six if the makeup of the hours is necessary”Source
Remote days that count
With a DESE approved AMI plan, hours taught at home on a closure day count as school in session, up to 36 hours a year; lost time after that must be made up.
“A district with an approved alternative methods of instruction plan shall not use alternative methods of instruction as provided for in the plan for more than thirty-six hours during a school year.”RSMo 171.033.5

How many snow days Missouri districts plan for
3 Missouri districts print a number of snow days on their own 2026 to 2027 calendars. A closing inside that number leaves the calendar as printed; one past it is made up, usually from a break or the end of the year.
