How Maryland counts a snow day
The school year
Maryland requires at least 180 school days and 1,080 hours within 10 months, with days of at least 3 hours.
“Shall be open for pupil attendance for at least 180 actual school days and a minimum of 1,080 school hours during a 10–month period in each school year”Md. Code, Educ. § 7-103(a)
Forgiven days
On a county board's application showing it tried to comply, the State Board may shorten the year when severe weather or a disaster prevented normal attendance, without cutting state or local funding.
“These adjustments may be granted only if normal school attendance is prevented because of: (i) Natural disaster; (ii) Civil disaster; or (iii) Severe weather conditions.”Md. Code, Educ. § 7-103(b)
From the Maryland State Department of Education and the state code, read October 8, 2026.

How many snow days Maryland districts plan for
11 Maryland districts print a number of snow days on their own 2026 to 2027 calendars. A closing inside that number leaves the calendar as printed; one past it is made up, usually from a break or the end of the year.
