How Niagara Falls calls a snow day
How families hear
By phone call, text message, the district website, social media and local TV.
“The District’s website, Facebook page, and X account will reflect the closed status. Closings also appear on the websites, and bottom-of-the-screen crawls on WGRZ-TV, WIVB-TV, WKBW-TV, and Spectrum News.”2026-2027 NFSD Calendar
3 built in snow days
On the 2026 to 2027 calendar, listed as “emergency days”.
“If we must close school for four days over the course of the year, we will use our three scheduled emergency (“extra”) days, and change March 31, 2027, to a regular school day.”Source
Making up a lost day
After the three emergency days, the spring recess days March 31, April 1 and April 2, 2027 become school days; the booklet gives two different orders for them.
“If still more days are needed, the following scheduled days off will become school days, in this order: April 2, 2027, April 1, 2027, March 31, 2027.”Source

How New York counts a lost day
New York requires 180 days of session plus 900 hours a year for kindergarten to grade 6 and 990 hours for grades 7 to 12. The Commissioner can excuse up to 5 days closed for extraordinary weather, but only if the district cannot make them up by using all its scheduled vacation days before the June Regents exams.
